Gout can give you lasting pain. That’s terrifying. Gout will give you repeating inflammations, draining the quality of your life. That’s OK. As long as gout will not kill me. I can live with it. I will accept my fate. But what if I tell you that gout can cause CANCER? Are you still willing to live with the fact that a dormant volcano will repeatedly erupt inside you?
You probably heard about it. Gout and cancer are related. Both statistical data and personal testimonies creates a lead to this link. The question is, does gout cause cancer? No. BUT, if you have gout you surely possess qualities that are a perfect fit to the criteria of cancer’s choice.
This article aims to explain the permanent damages from gout, including those that are not directly caused by gout but by what caused gout.
The Culprit:
Gout itself can wreak havoc, but with the aid of the culprit that started it all, the apocalypse draws near.
Gout is caused by uric acid crystallization in the synovial joints. The more uric acid in your bloodstream, the higher your chances of getting gout. Hence, if you suffer from gout it is a guarantee that you suffer from hyperuricemia as well. It is the presence of uric acid and acids in general that will give you damage.
The damage inflicted by gout and hyperuricemia is based from two principles:
Cell “Corrosion”
A wealth of acids is equal to a wealth of the very notorious free radicals. Free radicals can corrode your cells, altering their structure along with their overall functionality.
Thick Blood
The cell walls, including those of the red blood cells, are negatively charged. Like magnets of the same pole, they will repel each other. With Hydrogen atoms react with the atoms of the cell walls, the charge is slowly altered thus causing the cells to be attracted to each other thickening the blood. Having too much acids in the blood means having too much freely floating hydrogen as well. You can observe that the freshly drawn blood of a gout sufferer is quite coagulating. This is most observable under dark field microscopy.
PERMANENT Damages caused by Gout and Hyperuricemia
Damaged Joint
If the uric acid crystal grows too large, the joints are slowly chipped away as the uric acid crystal scratches the joints from the inside.
Damaged Kidneys
With too much uric acid, the kidneys are overburdened. Uric acid also sticks to the endothelial cells of the filtering units of the kidneys therefore reducing its overall filtration capacity. The situation can be worsened by the formation of a uric acid kidney stone.
Liver Damage
Just like the kidney, the liver is overburdened as well. This is especially true if you are taking allopurinol. Allopurinol will try to lower uric acid by blocking xanthine oxidase, an enzyme produced by the liver and is responsible for breaking down purine into uric acid. As the liver detects purine, it will produce more and more xanthine oxidase, an effort which is infinitely rendered useless by allopurinol.
Pancreatic Damage
The pancreas can be damaged as well because of pancreatic tophi. This can lead to type 1 diabetes.
Deafness
In very rare instances, tophi can form in the inner ear and lead to deafness.
Impaired Motor Control
Gout can grow in the spine as well (usually in the lumbar spine). Needless to say, this can affect the transmission of signals in your body.
Cancer
As your body gets toxic due to acids, your cells have to cope to survive. Some of them turn into cancer cells to tolerate the acidic environment and lack of oxygen (caused by thick blood). Furthermore, uric acid is known to improve the longevity of cancer cells. Hence, the chance of survival of the cancer cells that forms day to day are greater.
Almost-Permanent Damages caused by Gout and Hyperuricemia.
The following damage are “almost permanent”, since they are reversible but can be permanent if you chose to ignore the acidity of your bloodstream.
Type 2 Diabetes
This is caused by the corrosion of the cell walls. Insulin receptors are found in the cell walls. Therefore, cell wall damage can usually cause insulin resistance to an individual cells. If enough cells suffer from this condition, you will end up with type 2 diabetes.
Lack of Energy
The thickness of the blood will cause a lack of oxygen supply. This can also lead to mental effects, such as impaired memory and day dreaming. The anaerobic respiration of the cells are also boosted. Hence, this can also cause lactic acidosis which will worsen the situation!
Hypertension
Thick blood will require more pressure to circulate, hence hypertension. Furthermore, the acids in the body can cause endothelial dysfunction which will impair the ability of your blood vessels to control blood pressure by widening and narrowing. Endothelial dysfunction can lead to erectile dysfunction as well.
