Colgout, a brand name for colchicine, will manifest its effect after an average of 12-24 hours, though it can be much sooner or much later. Make sure to follow the prescribed dosage, especially because colchicine is poisonous. Usually, the dosage will be a maximum of 1.8mg a day. It could be a series of 0.3mg for every hour within six hours, or maybe 1.2mg followed by 0.6mg after an hour.
What to Expect
The pain and inflammation will go away, and will not come back for a couple of days or maybe even weeks. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle and eliminated the root cause of gout, it may not come back at all!
Be prepared for diarrhea. The chance of getting one is almost 100%. Who can blame your stomach? Colgout, and colchicine in general, is a poison. Your body will try to eliminate it by excretion. Say hello to diarrhea! In fact, a study suggests that the bioavailability of colchicine is 44% in average.
Sadly, colgout will only treat the pain and inflammation and not the uric acid which caused the inflammation that is why it is usually prescribed along allopurinol or febuxostat.
Why is Colgout a POISON?
It is quite safe to say that the pain and inflammation relief is the side effect, and the main effect is to damage your body. Here’s how:
Colchicine is a mitotic inhibitor. This means that it inhibits the process of mitosis.
Mitosis, or cell division, is the way in which cells reproduce. No matter what type of cell it is, be it in the blood, in the organs or wherever the cell is, the process in which they reproduce is through mitosis. Colchicine stops this process so your white blood cells will drop in numbers. When the WBC (specifically the neutorphils) drop counts, less of them will attack the uric acid crystal in your joints. This means that there will be less pain and inflammation! Furthermore, colchicine maims the microtubules of the neutrophils that is why they can not change shapes in order to attempt and engulf the uric acid crystal. Hence, pain signals are lessen to a great extent. Unfortunately, this comes at a cost.
If mitosis is inhibited, several bodily mechanisms are disrupted as the cells dwindle in number. For instance, your immune system can be down for some time if you take colchicine. Your WBC will be smaller in number, hence foreign entities can easily invade the body.  The production of the bone marrow is also affected hence furthering the risk of anemia. You will also feel less-energetic and dull as the RBC lowers in number. A male sufferer can also experience erectile dysfunction and infertility as the number of the sperm cells diminish and the endothelial cells of the penis is damaged. The kidney’s glomerular filtration rate can decrease as well as the endothelium of the filtration units of the kidney gets damaged.
If taken at 2mg, colgout can be fatal especially if the sufferer has kidney or liver diseases. If a gout sufferer has either of the two, he better steer clear of colgout and other brands of colchicine. This is because the bioavailability of colgout increases as those precious organs fail to excrete a volume of colgout. Hence, the toxin stays longer in the body. More mitosis than expected are inhibited.
The worst part is colgout, just like any other colchicine brands and any other medications out there is not selective. You can not instruct it to affect only the cells of the affected joint. It will patrol your body, randomly infecting cells.
