The foods we eat are nature’s (or human technology’s) greatest gifts. Other than the fact that eating can give us strength to face the day, well, it just feels good to eat! Especially eat delicious foods. Mmmmmm. The mere thought of my favorite food makes me drool with saliva. How I’d love to indulge myself, because today can be my last, or maybe tomorrow, or the next day. Who knows.
Unfortunately for some, they can not do so. Indulging themselves can cause health problems, and to some, PAIIIN. (Yes, I’m looking at you chronic gout)
This article aims to introduce a chronic gout diet.
What Should a Gout Sufferer Avoid?
As a gout sufferer, you are most likely aware of the cause of gout. Uric Acid.
“So, should I avoid foods that are rich in URIC ACID?”
Well, yes of course! If a food rich in uric acid exists, you should avoid it. Actually, what you should avoid are foods rich in PURINE.
So why purine and not uric acid? Because uric acid comes from purine!
Supposed to be, purine is a necessity for the body. It is required to form the nucleotides of the cell RNA and DNA. However, the body does not require CHUNKS of purine, because purine is recycled from dead cells in the first place. Unused purine is broken down to uric acid to be flushed out of the body.
The fact that the cells use purine means that uric acid will be naturally present in your body. This is also the reason why people who undergo chemotherapy (which is basically a cell genocide) can suffer from hyperuricemia.
However, take note that you SHOULD NOT TOTALLY ELIMINATE PURINE IN YOUR DIET. Almost every food we eat has the presence of purine. You only have to avoid eating PURINE RICH FOODS. That is what a chronic gout diet is about.
Examples of Purine Rich Foods
Finding examples of purine rich foods is fairly easy. Google it and thousands of pages will appear. The sad part is, most of these pages have hidden motives. Some of them will say that “Hey, these are the foods you should avoid. As a bonus I have created recipes avoiding them. Go buy them at amazon for $3.99”. Now, here is a list-of-purine-rich-foods-with-no-hidden-motives. Go ahead and remove them from the list of your chronic gout diet.
- Liver, kidney and other organ meats
- Poultry
- Lamb
- Pork
- Fish
- Mushroom
- Yogurt
- Rice
- Leafy Vegetables
Chronic Gout Diet the Right Way
So yeah. The list of the things you can eat is VERY limited. Why is this so? Because most things we eat are living things. All living things are made up of cells. All cells have purine!! So what should you eat? Stone? Sand? Well, the good news is, you can still eat all of the foods mentioned above. IN MODERATION and a BALANCED MANNER.
I’ll let you in a little secret. The secret to regaining your FREEDOM to eat!
What if the secret to preventing gout attack is not in the food you eat, but in the water you drink? Yes you read it right. IT IS IN THE WATER.
Here is a detailed explanation:
Your body is designed in a way that you can flush out uric acid without delay, but why do we get gout resulting from excess uric acid? BECAUSE THE LIVER (ALONG WITH THE WHOLE EXCRETORY SYSTEM) HAS EXTRA TASKS AT HAND. For instance, the liver is in charge of balancing the acidity of the body’s pH. When acidity is too much, uric acid along with the extra acids (THE EXTRA BURDEN) are temporarily stored in the interstitial fluids found in the tissue spaces, until they can be processed by the liver. If those spaces are full, uric acid is forced into other places, such as in the synovial fluids in between the synovial joints.
Now what if there is no EXTRA BURDEN? If we eliminate extra acids, there will be more space for uric acid. Therefore, there will be more time for your liver to flush the uric acid out.
