Gout, the disease of the kings, has existed ever since the human civilization learned the word “pleasure”, or maybe even before. Thus, gout has been associated with that word, though their connection is not as true as what we used to believe. Hence, the thought that treating gout means stopping many things pleasurable, and with such thought many decided to just go and stop trying to treat gout. Indulge yourself with tasty meat now and take pills later. Many settled indulging then taking the so-called ”uric acid reducers”
This article aims to introduce different “uric acid reducers”
Why Reduce Uric Acid?
Most likely, you are already aware that uric acid is a big NO-NO for gout. Well, uric acid IS the cause of gout so it is not just a no, but a big BIIG NOOO. Without uric acid the uric acid crystal that gives you suffering will not exist. That said, it is essential for gout sufferers to reduce uric acid in order to treat gout, or at least avoid future flare-ups.
“I can manage. No worries” OK. So maybe you learned to leave with the fact that gout will never leave you and you rather enjoy life and simply take your favorite uric acid reducer. BUT, it is not just the pain and inflammation that you should worry about. It is hyperuricemia itself. The presence of too much uric acid can give you severe complications. For instance, gout and diabetes has a very acidic affair! They are a package deal. Get one you will likely get the other. If you will not do it to not suffer from pain, then do it in order to avoid further complication.
ALL-opurinol, The medicine for ALL
One of the most popular medication for gout is allopurinol. “Uric acid reducer” they said. Name it. Anything that involves uric acid. Be it hyperuricemia, Tumor-lysis syndrome or uric acid kidney stones, allopurinol will treat them all. At least, temporarily.
There is no denying the effectiveness of allopurinol when it comes to uric acid reduction. Sadly, this reduction is only temporary. First, it does not flush uric acid out. Second, does not stop uric acid production. The only reason it reduces uric acid is because it PAUSE THE PRODUCTION OF URIC ACID.
Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It bonds with the enzyme responsible for breaking down purine into uric acid. Hence, the aforementioned enzyme, xanthine oxidase inhibitor, will be too occupied to break purine down. Thus, no uric acid is produced. This creates the illusion that your uric acid dropped. While this can help, too much dependence on this will lead to further damage. Sooner or later, the untouched purine will have to be broken down into uric acid. No uric acid now, twice the uric acid later. This creates a rush of uric acid, and in the process severe gout attack. This can also increase the risk of uric acid kidney stone as too much uric acid rushes at the same time.
Alkaline Foods
Foods that are rich in magnesium and calcium are probably your best bet for your uric acid reducer. Unlike allopurinol, they will yield no side effects. The minerals provided by such foods can be utilized by the body to balance the pH of your bloodstream and reduces the overall acidity of your body. For instance, instead of reacting to form oxalic acid (which will then reduce the rate at which uric acid is excreted), oxalate will react with magnesium thus reducing the acids that could have formed. This way, uric acid will be flushed out faster helping you treat your gout.
Alkaline Water
You are what you eat. And drink! Drink healthily and live healthily. Alkaline water will work like alkaline foods. They help flush acids out or even avoid their formation. Furthermore, it provides you with the minerals utilized by the body to balance the pH of your bloodstream. Think about this – your body is good in balancing its own acid-alkaline state. How does it do it? Carbon dioxide exhalation and urine excretion helps. But that is not enough. Your body has to “mine” minerals from your bones and muscle masses in order to add alkalinity to your bloodstream. Alkaline water is another good uric acid reducer. It helps you treat acidosis and eventually gout. For starters, you can try dropping ionic calcium into your glass of ordinary water.
